How to play Wend

Wend has four rules. Here they are, with what to look for on the board and the real first level of the game, before and after it is solved.

The goal

Every hidden word is a path of touching cells. Trace each word from its first letter to its last. When every open cell belongs to a word, the level is solved.

The rules

  1. Press the first letter of a word and drag through its letters in order. You can start from any cell.
  2. Move only between touching cells: left, right, up or down. Diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Paths never cross or overlap, and no word passes through a gray wall.
  4. Spell a word correctly and its path locks in. Find every word and the board is complete.

What you see on the board

  • Word slots: a row of blanks showing how many words are hidden and how many letters each has.
  • Rings: a ringed letter is the first letter of a word. Not every word starts with a ring.
  • Gray cells: walls. No word passes through them.
  • Colored paths: words you have found, with small arrows showing which way each one reads.

Example: level 1

This is the first level of Wend in English, exactly as the game generates it. The 5×5 grid has two wall cells and hides five words: two of four letters and three of five.

Level 1 as it opens: WANT is already traced for you, and the other four words show a ring on their first letter.

Start with the rings. The R in the top row runs right along the row: R, O, S, E spells ROSE. The L on the left edge zigzags up to the top-left corner: L, E, V, E, L. The T on the right edge loops left and down beside the wall to spell THREE, and the M in the bottom-right corner runs along the bottom row and turns back up to spell MUSIC.

Controls

Drag with one finger to trace a word. A word you have found stays locked, so there is no undo; Restart Puzzle in the options menu clears the board if you want a fresh start.

Questions and answers

Can a Wend word go diagonally?

No. Paths move only left, right, up or down between touching cells.

Do I have to use every letter?

Yes. Every open cell belongs to exactly one word, so the word lengths always add up to the number of open cells.
